care packs

in light of the recent xenophobic attacks, there have been thousands of displaced people who have been chased from their homes. they are currently living in makeshift camps across the city. resources are scarce, yet theres been no word yet from the government either condoning the attacks or offering support to the relief organisations such as the red cross.

but such is the south african way, we cannot rely on the government for anything, much less a timely response to a humanitarian crisis, and so therefore must take matters into our own hands. we have to push and fight for what we want to see happen in this country.

so it’s time to come out swinging.

the red cross is doing as best they can with the donations coming through to them, but they still need large corporate donations to help supply the three hot meals a day for the 5000+ people in the camps. if you are influential with a large corporate organisation please consider donating to them as they are set up to deliver food to the masses, they just need the actual food now.

if you are but one person and have a bit of money or time and would like to help, please consider the care packs as detailed below.

care packs are designed to meet the needs of people in a red cross camp who are being provided with food, basic shelter and a few toiletries. the items in each care pack will help with the additional needs of an individual for a day at a time.

they include the following:

joko and rooisbos tea bags, matches, two candles, safety pins, a threaded needle, 6 panty liners, 4 disinfectant wipes, 2 zap straps (for shelter building, securing tarps, tents etc), 2 aspirin, a pack of tissues, a razor, 2 elastic bands, a plaster, sunlight laundry soap and pyrex personal soap, toothpicks, throat lozenge and the ever important tin of zambuk.

we pack them into individual bags to make distribution easier. the camps are total chaos and deliver of goods leads to manic crowds fighting over scarce resources. we are able to request that only women receive a pack and then can take care of her family. i will distribute the first 50 packs today and be able to assess the unique needs of a specific camp and tailor the packs to fit needs that the red cross may be struggling to cover.

here’s the best part, each pack only costs R30. that’s 3 dollars. you can bring so much comfort to a small family and help a mother clean her babies, care for wounds, mend clothing, fix shelters and so much more for a mere 3 dollars.

i have the excel spreadsheet of each item, the cost per pack, the breakdown of how much of what goes in each pack and where to purchase each item. if you would like to sponsor a large number of packs and can assemble a team to pack them, please get in touch and i’ll forward you the instructions and then get them from you to the camps.

going forward i would like to provide toothbrushes, toothpaste and sanitary pads in each pack so if anyone knows where we can buy those in bulk and perhaps at wholesale costs, please get in touch.

the next 100 packs have been sponsored, if you or your business would like to sponsor more please get in touch with me at cc@ccrosslerphotography.com

thanks for the support, now lets go love our neighbours.
