i first met gary in uganda. his twinkling eyes were set in a deeply tanned face just barely showing through his bushy beard and wild hair. he was travelling though africa with his best friend and when i found myself needing a lift to kenya, they were my knights in shining armour. i didn’t get out of his car in kenya and then fell madly in love with this best friend of his and when we married, i gained a fabulous best-friend-in-law.
i have loved gary since we met, his sense of humour springs effortlessly from his lightning fast mind. he is a born engineer and can instantly see what’s been badly designed or poorly implemented then form a hilarious joke about it before anyone else has realised the fault. while he would never admit to being the smartest guy in the room, his razor sharp wit gives him away every time.
since i’ve been married to luke we have been looking, praying and waiting for gary’s wife.
until one day, i found her.
faye is a wedding coordinator and we worked together on a beautiful wedding three years ago. she stayed in my mind long after because i thought she would be perfect for gary. her manner was efficient and determined, yet she was kind and gracious. the bride and groom of that same wedding had been trying to hook them up also, but neither gary nor faye were convinced yet. when she wrote to me a year later asking if i was available to shoot for her clients, i jumped on my one and only chance. i wrote her back right away letting her know i was already booked, but asking if she happened to be single. i caught her completely off guard and immediately launched into the most aggressive sales pitch. i told her about gary’s love of God and the kind of husband that would make him, his dedication, his intertwined brilliance and humour, his intuitive emotional intelligence and his charisma.
she took the bait. while not immediately prepared to be ‘set-up’ she was intrigued and soon they casually crossed paths at a braai they both happened to be invited to (okay, so a completely staged blind date designed to make them fall madly in love by our aforementioned bride and groom). from that night they were hooked. i was in canada at the time and waking up early to call south africa, hanging on every detail as to when their first date would be and how it went and if he liked her and what she said etc etc.
over the longest 6 months ever, they decided to be together forever. as they fell in love with each others quirks i couldn’t help but say ‘i told you so’. yes, he’s funny and sweet and bright and active. and i know, she’s warm and smart and capable and generous.
it was the most emotional wedding i’ve had the honour of photographing. we stood together as a family and praised God for the wonderful work He had done in moulding these two magnificent people so that they would fit so perfectly together. luke served as best man (a more apt title has never been given) and we welcomed faye into our family.
i cannot wait to do life with them and watch as they fall more in love, raise kids, travel the world and serve God together. they will be exceedingly happy together whatever comes their way while luke and i will be right there alongside them.
i’m committed to growing with them daily, loving them through thick and thin, and saying ‘i told you so’ every now and then.
