i have a going home song.
it’s a song that i started to notice kept getting played as i was leaving the reception. i found it serendipitous the first few times, then it started to get creepy. i didn’t choose the song so much as it chose me, but it became my pack-up-and-strut-out anthem. i now ask the dj to play it at the hour i’m supposed to leave so that while i’m shooting out on the dance floor, i get a signal that it’s home-time. at one wedding i heard it playing about 45 minutes before i was due to leave, only to come on AGAIN 45 minutes later while i was saying goodbye to the bride. yes, it chose me.
no, i won’t tell you what it is because it’s horrible and embarrassing.
but aside from all that, this was a wedding i never wanted to end! charmaine and travis got married at one of my favourite venues, the orchid house at collisheen. and they had booked my industry bff josh hundermark as their videographer. he always pushes me to do my best work because i know that he is getting absolutely awesome footage, so the bar gets raised higher and higher. his energy and passion feed mine and together we bounce ideas around and solve problems and have a ridiculous amount of fun doing it. months ago i found an amazing location for a creative shoot and i had been saving it for josh, waiting for the right couple, wanting to see him skip around with glee over the breathtaking light. and he did. and then i did.
at dinner that night we gushed over the day. travis and charmaine were the ideal subject, bright and fun, gorgeous and willing to step around the dead birds to get a shot. i started telling josh about my terrible, embarrassing going home song and it was with relief-tinged sadness that i realised i would be spared it that evening. travis and charmaine’s friends happen to be the incredible band, red light stereo. they were dominating the dance floor all night and sent the crowd into manic dance frenzies with each cover that was better than the original. after a crazy hour of trying not to get elbowed in the face on the dance floor, it was home time. josh, his assistant and me took to a back room to carefully disassemble and pack away our gear, we bid each other goodbye and started back into the main hall to fight our way through the packed dance floor. unbeknownst to us the band had gone on a break and as i set foot back on the dance floor, laden with my gear, i heard my song. playing us out. i turned to see josh’s eyes wide in amazement, knowing that my song had yet again found me with an impeccable timing. we piled our equipment high on the nearest table and took 3 minutes to dance like morons to one of the worst songs in pop history.
but it’s my song.
